C3 SETS A NEW NATIONAL RECORD WITH 1,008 KIDS IN THE
CALEDON KINETICO RUNNING FESTIVAL
Over 1000 children as young as two years of age through to their teens covered the Riverdale Fitness Mill one mile course to set a national record for the most kids in a run. “When we set the goal of 1,000+ kids to run, many people thought we were crazy” said Olympic coach Barrie Shepley. “I was a bit blown away to see so many amazing kids and their families out setting the record and celebrating healthy living” said Shepley. The Kinetico Running Festival in just its second year has proven to be one of the most enjoyable family experiences in the country. Well over 5,000 family and friends filled the race venue and cheered the kids on.
Kevin Smith, one of Canada’s great endurance athletes, won the Kinetico Ten Mile run while Collingwood’s Claudia Johnston, fresh off a victory in Muskoka last weekend, won the women’s ten mile race. The ten mile race had world-blind runner/triathlete Ron Hackett from Kingston Ontario. Canada’s 75 year old Gord Brockie was the day’s oldest finisher.
The 5km run was won by C3’s David Sharratt. Sharratt, a two-time Ontario College Champion, used the run as a training workout for his up coming season. Second behind Sharratt was 18 year old Taylor Reid who will be going to the world duathlon championships this coming weekend. The women’s race was won by 11 year old Kirsten Vergara from Toronto. “This incredible 11 year old beat some of elite women who have raced around the world for Canada” said her personal coach Barrie Shepley. The 5km run had husband-wife combo Dave Watts and Louise McGonigal. The dynamic duo are two of the top Ironman athletes in the world and were in Caledon with their grand-children to help set a national record. “This record is a tribute to the many parents and coaches who came out today, the incredible C3 volunteers and the key sponsors Kinetico, Riverdale Fitness Mill, the Town of Caledon, Boston Pizza and the Toronto Rotary. “Through the generous support of our race sponsors, 1,008 kids crossed the finishing line today and funds were raised for the Ontario Lung Association and the Caledon Community Services” said Shepley. One of the highlights of the day, was the town’s recognition of 15 year old Jade Scognamillo.
Scognamillo became the youngest athlete to ever swim the 52km of Lake Ontario this past August. “Jade is a truly amazing girl and we are so proud of her “ said Caledon Mayor Marilyn Morrison.
Many elite athletes showed up to sign autographs for the kids. 11x Ironman Champion Lisa Bentley, Olympian Cameron Sylvester, top snowboarder Jake Holden, along with Sean Bechtel, Andrew Yorke, AP Smith, Nat Faulkner, track cyclist Krista Ruby and top marathon runners Reid Coolsaet, Tara and Andrew Smith. “The kids were thrilled to have a chance to meet some of the country’s best athletes” said Shepley. Blessed with perfect 23c weather, clowns, a climbing wall, jumping castle and a new national record for kids, the event has set an incredibly high bar for the future.
