C3 Race Report by John Mahood

The 2014 Grand Rapids Triathlon was chosen as the only triathlon in the US to host the USAT Long Course Nationals for this year.  With Grand Rapids being about a six hour drive from Toronto, 11 C3 Athletes as well as family members made the trip south west passing through Sarnia and on into Michigan to Grand Rapids.  Over 500 volunteers helped support the close to 1800 athletes.

With the swim leg of the race taking part in the Thornapple River, the race day water temperatures recorded a comfortable (22c). For those swimming, the river conditions were ideal.   The bike is a rolling out and back with both v. light traffic and little wind. The run takes place on closed public roads with many spectators.  For those doing the half – ironman, the run is a two loop run course having more than adequate aid stations and volunteers.

The USA’s Daniel Stubleski finished first stopping the clock at 3:56 to record the overall top male time. The top female half ironman finisher was Dani Fischer recording a 4:23.

For clubs brining over 10 athletes to the race, organizers provided free tents close to the start / finish line which allowed  the C3 group the freedom to utilize it for the day

The three C3 Relay members had great individual legs with Luis Lopez swimming a sub 30 min half ironman swim, Patricia Lopez covering the 90k bike in just over 3 hrs and Susan Anderson running a sub-1:42

In the Sprint, Uli Porten finished strong while Geoff Sullivan participating in the Aquabike followed his swim with a strong sub 2:30 90k bike.  Uli resized

In the half-ironman races, Hans Porten finished in a strong 4th in his category with an overall time of 4:50 and change. Glenn Gunderman followed in 5:24, with John Mahood and Lisa Petters following in 5:29 and 5:39 respectively. Peggy Reid finished with a 6:16 followed by husband Jim finishing in 6:50.

All in all, the weekend, organizers, volunteers and the people of Grand Rapids made this triathlon one to consider in the future by any C3 athlete who is looking for a destination race that puts on an excellent well organized event.
