C3 Race Report by John Mahood
The 2014 Grand Rapids Triathlon was chosen as the only triathlon in the US to host the USAT Long Course Nationals for this year. With Grand Rapids being about a six hour drive from Toronto, 11 C3 Athletes as well as family members made the trip south west passing through Sarnia and on into Michigan to Grand Rapids. Over 500 volunteers helped support the close to 1800 athletes.
With the swim leg of the race taking part in the Thornapple River, the race day water temperatures recorded a comfortable (22c). For those swimming, the river conditions were ideal. The bike is a rolling out and back with both v. light traffic and little wind. The run takes place on closed public roads with many spectators. For those doing the half – ironman, the run is a two loop run course having more than adequate aid stations and volunteers.
The USA’s Daniel Stubleski finished first stopping the clock at 3:56 to record the overall top male time. The top female half ironman finisher was Dani Fischer recording a 4:23.
